t doesn’t matter where I am—speaking at a seminar, waiting on line at the
Iairport, or even worshipping at church—I hear the same complaint all
the time. Eyes light up when I tell folks that I am an asset protection and tax
attorney. “I’m paying too much tax,” they say, but when I ask, “What are
you doing about it?” I get a blank stare.
I’ve come to expect those blank stares.
Everyone I speak to believes that they pay too much in taxes, and they say
that they want to reduce their tax bill, but very few are willing to do what that
requires. Some of you may be thinking, Why bother? After all, as Ben Franklin
is reputed to have quipped, “There are only two things you can count on—
                   death and taxes.”
Why bother? Because taxes are one of the biggest destroyers of wealth in
this country. Many reports I’ve read state that the average American spends
more on taxes every year than on food, clothing, and shelter.
