Adam Smith got it right in the eighteenth century when he said that a
market economy is only sustainable with an educated citizenry and when
large organizations don’t have significant political influence. Without an
education, people lack opportunity and are more prone to rebellion. When
large businesses have too much political power, it leads to monopoly,
followed by consumer and political rebellion. Therefore, all business
leaders have a responsibility to support public education and oppose the
concentration of political power in business.
