202 I CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
"'Twelve years old, and I've won a thousand ofthem since. All bUt
four of them: I explained, 'took place in our backyard in my
hometown of Monongahela, Pennsylvania, a few miles down the
road from Pittsburg,"
In other words, in his backyard, he rehearsed winning the Super Bowl
thousands oftimes.
This is what he saysabout individual preparation:
"Individuals prepare in different ways. What works for one person
doesn't work for another. Some wait until the last minute. Some
require a degree offear as motivation. Others want to eliminate all
distractions, havecomplete silence and shut themselves offfrom the
world. Others prepare with music in the background or in the
company ofother people. Some need to rehearse over and over until
they feel confident. Whatever the method, the goal of good
preparation is the same: to ready ourselvesfor optimal performance,
to play or work at our best."
And finally, this is what he saysis the key to preparation:
"We do strongly believeand teach that repetitionisking in the world
ofpreparation. Whether in sports, running the same drills over and
over, or in businesspracticing a salespitch or refining apresentation
we gain through preparation a sense ofmastery and self-confidence
that can be taken into the real game."
What Joe Montana says is one of the most valuable lessons 1 learned
from sports. 1 meet people who say to me, "I played your CASHFLOW
game once. What do you recommend 1do next?"
Can you imagine that? They played once, and they think they know the
game. When I recommend they play it at least 10 more times and teach it
to 10 other people, they look at me strangely. Whenever 1see that look, 1
know that person probably does not understand what it takes to win. AsJoe
Montana says, "Repetition is king."
