player than as a golfer. I loved rowing, football and rugby because I
am better on a team. I am the same way in business, which iswhy I
am very careful about whom I have on my team.
2. More business is done on golfcourses. Both my dads played golf
Both were pretty good.My poor dad played golfwith his friends, his
fellow teachers, for fun. My rich dad played golfto become rich. He
said, "More business deals are done on the golfcourse than in the
boardroom." He went on to explain saying, "The tougher the
negotiation, the more relaxed the environment needs to be."
It took me a number of years to grow and mature before I fully
understood the wisdom in his words. Today, if a negotiation is
involved and complicated, I will often ask the person to play golf
with me so we can discuss the deal. With a relaxed golf course
environment, the negotiation has more time to develop, and when
the environment is relaxed, there is often more flexibility in
thinking. It seems the open space ofthe golfcourse allows for more
open thinking.
In Conclusion
Even though I am not a dedicated golfer, I am dedicated to winning at
the game of business. Golf is the game of business. I still do not take the
game ofgolfasseriously as many players do, but I take the game ofbusiness
very seriously.That iswhy I am a member ofthree country clubs. A country
club is often the best place to do business, as well as find out whom to do
business with.
P.S. True to form of any great businessperson, when Donald and I
became serious about doing this book together, he invited me to
one ofhis golfcourses, Trump National GolfClub in Los Angeles.
