WHAT ARE YOUR PHILOSOPHIES CONCERNING GOD, RELIGION AND MONEY? I 219

~When I decided to teach and follow aprofession my heart wanted to follow,
my life changed dramatically. In Before lOu Quit lOur Job, my book on
entrepreneurship, I write about my decision to become a teacher and all the
good fortune that came my way once I made that decision. One ofthe gifts
from heaven was that my wife, Kim, came into my life the moment I made
       mydecision to teach.
I have tremendous trust in God, a higher power. I just question some of
the beliefs different religions have about God and who holds the key to
heaven. In my opinion, our main job in life is to make life here on earth a
       little bit more like heaven.

       TheSecond Bit OfConfusion
I The second bit confusion was about God and money. I still remember

myfriend's mom, who was very rich, alwaysinferring that money was evil. I
wondered why, ifshe thought money was evil, she simply didn't give all her
money to the church she attended.
I did not know ifit was anti-God to want to be rich. I even wondered
ifpoor people were going to heaven and the rich were not. This confusion
between God and money haunted me.
At a summer church camp, I found the answer. The church brought in
a young youth minister, just for the summer. I still remember the day he
walkedinto camp. All the older church leaders gasped as he walked in with
aguitar slung on his back, wearing blue jeans, a T-shirt and cowboy boots.
Let me remind you that this was Hawaii in the early 1960s, and the only
people we saw dressed like that were juvenile delinquents in the movies.
Naturally, the kids liked him immediately.
Instead ofpreaching and telling us what to do and what not to do, he led
US in song and dance. Instead ofbeing taught to feel bad or guilty,we learned
       to feelgood about ourselves.
The head minister of the church looked and dressed like a dried-up
String bean. He often grumpily warned us ofthe potential evilsofthe flesh.
Sowhen this young, happy youth minister arrived, the tension between the
two men was evident. During one ofour evening bonfires, I asked my usual
