I AM A BABY BOOMER WITHOUT MUCH MONEY, WHAT SHOULD I Do? I 261

incomes will find those fixed incomes will not buy as much. What will
happen to their retirement savings if the price of gasoline goes to $10 a
       gallon?
And we already know about Social Security and Medicare. I hope none
of you reading this book are counting on the government to take care of

       you.
It is estimated that 80 percent ofthe baby boomers are not going to be
ableto afford a comfortable retirement. Many are in trouble simply because
they followed their parents' financial plans.

    ~ I'llJust Keep Working
.'. .• Some of my boomer friends say they will just keep working. While I
, think work is an excellent way to stayactive and alive, thinking you can work
I foreverisalittle shortsighted. What will happen when you cannot physically

I....... work? The cost of nursing home eare is staggering. And what ifYOUt kids
l do not have a spare bedroom for you?

    . Health, Wealth And Happiness

~' When I was in school at the academy, I realized that my dad had truly

i been a successful man. After all, he was the head of education, was
~ recognized for his service and was well-respected by his peers. But he did
    !
'~' not have health, wealth or happiness.
,•.:." My dad's health was deterioratingbecause he smoked two to three packs
t of unfiltered cigarettes a day. He eventually died oflung cancer.
      ,..
    '
.,. . He had no wealth. He made a lot ofmoney, but he spent as much as he
made. He tried to save and did not invest. I believe he was counting on a
•...',teacher's pension, Social Security and Medicare to take care ofhim.
". He was also not happy. The more successful he became, the more the
pressure ofhis work took its toll. He was rarely at home. Although I played
SpOrts most ofmy life, he never made it to any ofmy games. He was always
working. He was always on the road, traveling to schools all over the state
and attending PTA meetings - but not available to attend his own kids'
       PTA meetings.
