Donald's Response
College Days
I know this surprises people, but I was a very good student. I was
serious, attentive, and applied myself to every class. When Robert
and I were discussing our college days and what might have caused
usto become rich, I remembered that I spent my spare time studying
real estate and foreclosures on my own time. I always did more than
was required.
That, I think, is a key to success. Not just financial success, but
in everything. If you do only what you need to do to get by, then get
by you will. But the end results will not be outstanding or
exceptional. You have to do what others don't want to do to have an
edge.
Golf legend Gary Player's saying, "The harder I work, the luckier
I get," is one that I've adopted. The worst disservice we can do to
ourselves is to expect things to be easy. I knew that real estate
wasn't a snap, and I prepared myself. Whatever your interests are,
be sure to do the same.
There were other students in my class that were exceptional
students, but they didn't do so well in real life. I sometimes think
they were focusing so much on the academics required, and not
keeping an eye on the outside world, that when they graduated, they
were surprised by what they faced. I think I wasaware of the dangers
and difficulties of the world and kept myself aware of national and
international events, those related to real estate and otherwise, so
