CHAPTER TWENTY-Two
I AM AN ADULT
WITHOUT MUCH MONEY,
WHAT SHOULD I Do?
Robert's Response
For my parents' generation, the WWII generation, the rules for success
t ,
were pretty simple: "Go to school, get a job, work hard and the company and
the government will take care ofyou once you are through working."They
received regular pay raises and promotions because America's economy was
growing, oil was cheap and we were the leaders ofthe free world. Our dollar
was strong. and after World War II, many nations owed us money. Today,
almost everything has been reversed.
t The rules ofmoney have changed. As already stated, in 1971 our doll ar
t changed from money to a currency, which means the government can print
it faster than you can save it. The second change was in 1974, when big
corporations let employees know they were not going to take care ofthem
I for life.
In 1996. there was another law change. known as the Telecom Reform
r Act. The reason this change is affecting the rules ofmoney and employment
t today is because the Telecom Reform Act made it easy and inexpensive for
I... businesses to hire workers in China. India. Ireland and the rest ofthe world.
, When I was a kid, the only people who were threatened by foreign
competition were blue-collar workers. As you know, many factory jobs went
Overseas. After the 1996 Telecom Reform Act, white-collar, college-level
jobs started going overseas as well.
